Phil started busking at an early age with the assistance of his battery-powered gramophone.

"How much is that doggie in the window?"

At one of the parent-teacher gatherings at his school,
Phil's parents were advised that Phil had no interest in music...
" That's funny, he's been playing the guitar for 4 years!", his Mum.replied.

"At the age of 16 after hearing a local guitarist play things I couldn't even imagine..", Phil recalls.."I saw Brian May on Top of The Pops, performing Killer Queen. This was the turning point in my musical career. After realising that strings were meant for bending and not just strumming, I bought the sheet music to Killer Queen, which I still have, the single, which I still have, and played until I had sore fingers, which I still have."

Phil was a founder member of a cabaret band, Rebel, playing doo-wop music. This proved invaluable when working out, and performing Queen's harmonies, in QEII, which are always spectacular.

After Rebel came B-Fifteen then QEII.

Phil has had the Red Special created. Apologies to perfectionists and traditionalists, but Phil has requested a couple of changes to the original specifications: The original requires that you remove a plate in order to change strings, and a Hip-Shot D Dropper has been added to enable the song Fat-Bottomed girls to sound as per the original without wasting too much time changing tunings or guitars.

To gain information to recreate this "One-off" guitar, we scoured web sites, books, friends, neighbours, home and abroad, so that every possible piece of information could be gleaned and stored ready for use.

Q&A Time

What do you like best and least about being in QEII?
Best would be the rush of finishing the whole of Bohemian Rhapsody to tumultuous applause and least is getting to bed in the early hours of the morning.

If you could own a piece of Queen, what would it be?
Obviously, the World famous Red Special.

When you are not on stage, is there any part of you that is still like your counterpart?
I am a perfectionist and a stickler for detail.

Which song do you most enjoy performing, and why?
Tie your mother down, because it's just so punchy.

What is your favourite and least favourite QEII memory so far?
Hearing a lady named Vanita, on the radio, say that she enjoyed us more than she enjoyed Simply Red.  Least, was our very first gig as QEII the club expected us to accommodate bingo. (Aaaaarrrgh)

How would you improve your stage performance?
Try to relax into the solos as the adrenaline rush sometimes carries me away and Brian always sounds so laid back.
